Great article! Just used this to implement a custom page on one of my site. May I add that there is some plugins that would allow to easily put a page as a static homepage. Now saying that, I still had a problem since my menu was showing all the pages. So I used the King Page widget that would allow you to choose which pages to include and which to exlude.
